Coffee Cup Snuggle and Coaster Directions

Cotton and quilted batting Coffee Cup Snuggle with Buttons and Coaster.

Approximate finished size - Fits 10 or 14 ounce Coffee Cup

Machine washable.

Recommend washing material to remove dyes before cutting and sewing.

Coffee Cup Snuggle with Handles and Optional Attached Coaster

 

Adjustments in height and width may be necessary based on coffee cup size. Also, they can be made with rounded corners, an indention for drinking, or with only one handle. The quilted parts can be a contrasting thread so they can be seen easier.

 

Items needed:

1 square foot - Material of choice.

1 square foot - Quilt Batting.

6 inches of thin round elastic string, or two elastic hair ties.

2 Buttons (Large).

Some common coffee cup sizes:

14 ounce - Tall, 4.5 inches high, 10.25 inches circumference.

10 to 12 ounce - Short, 3.75 inches high, 10.25 inches circumference.

 

Pieces to cut: (2 sides each of material, and one length each of batting)

Tall Coffee Cup Snuggle - 12 inches long X 4.5 inches high.

Tall Coffee Cup Handles - 6 inches X 2 inches. (Cut 1 or 2).

Tall Coffee Cup Coaster - 5.5 inch circumference circle.

 

or

 

Short Coffee Cup Snuggle - 11.5 inches long X 3.5 inches high.

Short Coffee Cup Handles - 6 inches X 2 inches. (Cut 1 or 2).

Short Coffee Cup Coaster - 5 inch circumference circle.

 

The Tall Coffee Cup Snuggle will be used in the examples below.

 

Coffee Cup Snuggle:

Step 1: Snuggle

Cut front and back material, and 1 piece of batting for each.

Cut out Tall Coffee Cup Snuggle - 12 inches long X 4.5 inches high.

Cut out 1 or 2 Tall Coffee Cup Handles - 6 inches X 2 inches.

Cut out Tall Coffee Cup Coaster - 5.5 inch circumference circle.

 

Step 2: Handles

Pin Coffee Cup Handles pieces with panels facing, and the batting on the back.

Sew down each long side.

Use a safety pin through the batting and one side to pull the handle through, with right sides facing out.

Set aside.

 

Step 3: Snuggle

Pin Coffee Cup Snuggle with panels facing, and the batting on the back.

Attach Coffee Cup Handles pieces on the inside of the inside facing panels. May have to pin one side and sew it and then pin and sew the other side. Distance should be about 3 inches from the ends, and they should be about 3 inches apart.

Sew down each long side.

Use a safety pin through the batting and one side to pull the handle through, with right sides facing out.

Set aside.

 

Step 4: Loops and End

Cut, tie, and attach the 2 elastic loops to one end of the Coffee Cup Snuggle.

Turn it so that the ends are inside.

Sew this end closed.

 

Step 5: End

Turn the last side so that the ends are inside.

Sew the last end closed.

 

Step 6: Quilt Pattern

Using the machine, quilt a simple design in each section between the end and the handles, and between the handles.

 

Step 7: Buttons

Check your sample cup to see exactly where the Buttons need to be.

Attach the 2 Buttons.

Verify it fits around the cup.

 

Step 8: Coaster

With the material panels facing, and the backing on the bottom, sew the circle around, leaving between 1 and 2 inches open.

Tie and trim.

Turn it right side out.

Fold the remaining part in, and finish sewing shut.

Quilt a small pattern in the center, about the size of the cup.

 

Step 9: (Optional) Add Coaster to Snuggle

Attach part of Coaster to bottom of Snuggle. Be sure this is pinned to where the seam will be against the cup. Carefully sew around and attach all of the Snuggle to the Coaster. Part of the Coaster will be open.
